Hydraulic Test Stands 101

Are you required to static test or functionally test hydraulic equipment? If so, you need to know a little about some of the different features available. One style of test stand can’t supply the required data for every scenario.

RG Group makes all kinds of hydraulic testing equipment. Here’s a review of several recent projects detailing what they are being used for.

This 175hp diesel test stand was designed for the construction industry. The stand’s main function is to test repaired pile drivers before being sent into the field. Pile drivers are used to hammer I-beams or sheets of steel into the ground for structural support. This test stand is capable of supplying 55gpm (gallons per minute) at 5,000 psi. That is what is required for the largest pile driver the customer uses. The test stand is portable so equipment can be tested in the field if required. Pressure can be easily adjusted with a manual pressure control valve.

This test stand (above) is used to test hydraulic components like check valves, small hydraulic motors and manual control valves after they have been rebuilt. It was designed with wheels so it can be moved around inside a testing facility for the Navy. It’s capable of suppling hydraulic fluid at 5gpm at pressures ranging from 100 to 3,000 psi. All of the hydraulics components required to create the pressure and flow are contained inside the housing cabinet. It has a built-in drip tray to contain leaks or spills. The stand will capture that fluid and drain it into a container inside the cabinet.

This test stand is used to static test items that are submersed deep in the ocean. It’s capable of building pressure to 10,000 psi. Everything in enclosed inside a heavy steel enclosure. The test chamber this hooks up to is built into the basement of the facility because of the high pressures. It’s controlled by a PC and can chart and record pressures/times as the testing is being done. The operator just needs to enter the pressures and duration of time required. The PC will slowly let the chamber build to the required pressure and times.

Hopefully this will give you an idea of the variety of testing scenarios that can be achieved. Different industries require different end data, and that means different types of test stands. If you have details for your testing project, let us know and we’ll work with you to create the test stand you need!
